"I am truly grateful and honored to be receiving the CBC scholarship to pursue my dream of becoming an IBCLC.
Breastfeeding has always been near and dear to me. Growing up, my mother would share stories of how long it took for her to wean me off nursing with just about anyone who would listen. Yes, I was embarrassed by her stories but I knew if I ever became a mother, I was sure I would breastfeed too.
Then it happened just 16 months ago. I became a new mom to a 36 week old, 6 lbs baby boy. I was day 2 postpartum and still didn't see my milk coming in! I thought my body would have responded immediately after delivery. I was worried and uncertain of my abilities to be able to provide for him nutritionally and felt disappointed that he needed to be supplemented with formula, even though I knew better being a Nutritionist and a CLC. The only thing that mattered to me then was being a new mom on this journey that seemed so daunting.
I am positive my breastfeeding experience would have been very different had I not been supported by the lactation consultants who visited me while I was on the postpartum ward. From helping me use the SNS feeder to supplement my baby at the breast to encouraging me during times of doubt, I truly felt their support. For 3 days, I had a new LC visit me. They would leave a number on the white board in my room to let me know they were just a phone call away, if I ever needed them. That is who I would love to be to other moms, the support they need to help them achieve their breastfeeding goals.
So thank you, CBC for offering me this great opportunity."
