JO ANN ETTIENNE-MODESTE
Jo Ann Ettienne-Modeste’ s passion for breastfeeding is fueled by the thought that more can be done to support African-American/Black women who may choose to breastfeed if they have more access to the right information and a culturally appropriate network of support. She is a Contract Coordinator in the Division of Health Services at the Connecticut Department of Social Services. For the past seven years she has collaborated with program, fiscal, legal, and contract staff to execute Memorandums of Understanding, Personal Service Agreements, and Point of Service contracts. Her career began at the Connecticut Department of Public Health where she assisted in the development of community health center program restructuring, planning, and implementation to improve contractual compliance and produce uniform outcome measures. She is a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a B.A. in Public Health (Individualized) and a B.A. in English. She is currently working on an M.S. in Health Administration at the University of Maryland. Her research interests include health literacy, health equity, breastfeeding practices and policies, and intersectionality and identity development. She also serves as an editing, writing, and branding consultant for small businesses at Jo Modeste Consulting. She is at peace when having raw and emotionally risky discussions, many of which revolve around protected classes and family dynamics.
