In July 2001, the Department of of Public Health convened representatives from local health departments, Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC), American Academy of Pediatrics, hospitals, community health centers, La Leche League of Connecticut, lactation consultants, nurses, nutritionists, parent educators, consumers, and formed the Connecticut Breastfeeding Coalition (CBC) to promote and support breastfeeding as the norm for infant and child feeding in Connecticut.

In 2000, Connecticut's breastfeeding initiative rate in the hospital setting was 67.8% and, at 6 months the rates was 32.9%.*  Connecticut is close to meeting U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Healthy People 2010 breastfeeding objectives, which 75% hospital initiation and 50% at 6 months.

Our Committees

  • The Information and Data subcommittee identifies methods for collecting data on breastfeeding, including initiation and duration.

  • The Public Awareness subcommittee develops resources on breastfeeding for the consumer and provides consumer education

  • The Education and Training subcommittee focuses on provided access to training regarding breastfeeding information for child and health care providers, their staff, and families

  • The Policy and Advocacy subcommittee develops materials to increase awareness of breastfeeding policies and women's rights regarding breastfeeding.

  • The Administrative Committee is the administration arm of the coalition and deals with such things as development of voting methodology, protocols for development of a new document, identification of coalition spokespersons, etc.

Meetings

  • The CBC meets monthly at various locations throughout the state and has five subcommittees that work towards accomplishing the goals of the CBC.
